World Record Ride in Winnipeg: Jason Connor’s Push for More Pump Tracks

Winnipeg’s biking community is buzzing with excitement thanks to Jason Connor, a professional downhill mountain biker and new resident of the city. Connor recently set out to break his own world record, travelling the furthest distance on a pump track without pedalling—a feat he hopes will do more than just etch his name into the Guinness Book of World Records. He wants it to highlight the need for more pump track facilities in Winnipeg, giving kids and budding bikers a place to hone their skills and embrace the sport.

A Record-Breaking Attempt

On October 13, 2024, Connor hit the Sage Creek pump track, aiming to shatter his previous world record of 25 kilometres, set in New Zealand four years ago. After two hours and just over 220 laps, Connor surpassed his goal, clocking in an incredible 50.60 kilometres. “The last 40 laps were tough,” Connor admitted. “It’s harder than you think—body position, the lack of pedalling—it really takes a toll on your feet and hips.”

Connor’s attempt is now awaiting verification from the Guinness Book of World Records. But for him, this ride was about more than personal achievement.

Bringing Attention to the Sport

Since moving to Winnipeg two years ago, Connor has become deeply involved in the local biking scene. One of his main missions? To advocate for more pump tracks—small, looping bike tracks where cyclists use their body movements rather than pedals to navigate. According to Connor, these tracks play a crucial role in bridging the gap between learning to ride and taking on more challenging courses like BMX tracks.

“A pump track is less intimidating for kids. You’ve got kids who just learned to ride without training wheels, and their next step could be the BMX track, which can be a bit daunting. Pump tracks, on the other hand, help them gain confidence and improve their biking skills in a safer, more accessible way,” he explains.

A Growing Demand in Winnipeg

Connor has seen firsthand the growing enthusiasm for biking in Winnipeg. The Sage Creek pump track, where he set his new record, is packed daily with kids, teens, and adults of all ages. “It’s really cool to see these kids embracing outdoor time, building their skills, and getting healthy exercise,” Connor says. He notes that Winnipeg is starting to develop more bike parks, but there’s still a need for greater infrastructure.

“The sport is heading in such a positive direction here in Manitoba,” he shares. “But we need more facilities, more pump tracks, so everyone can have access to them—no matter their age or skill level.”

A Vision for the Future

Connor’s record-breaking ride is just the beginning. He hopes to spark a larger conversation around the importance of pump tracks and biking facilities in Winnipeg. With biking on the rise in the city, he believes that now is the time to invest in spaces that allow young cyclists to build their skills in a supportive environment.

“If we can get more people involved, more support for pump tracks and bike parks, it will create a ripple effect. It’s about fostering a love for the sport and making it accessible to everyone.”

For Winnipeggers interested in the sport or advocating for more facilities, Jason Connor’s world record attempt serves as an inspiring reminder of what’s possible—both on and off the track. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or just getting started, the call to action is clear: it’s time to pedal forward and support Winnipeg’s growing biking community.
