Introduction
In an impactful move to promote children’s health and educational success, the governments of Canada and Manitoba have united to expand school food programs. This collaboration, spearheaded by Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew, will provide nutritious meals to over 19,000 additional children across Manitoba, starting this school year. The initiative aligns with the broader National School Food Program, ensuring more children have access to the healthy meals they need to thrive academically and beyond.
Expanding the National School Food Program in Manitoba
This school meal expansion is part of the $1-billion federal National School Food Program, which aims to serve up to 400,000 children across Canada each year. Manitoba is the second province, following Newfoundland and Labrador, to implement this program. The federal government has committed $17.2 million over three years, while Manitoba has pledged $30 million for the 2024-2025 school year. This funding will not only improve food access for children but also help families save up to $800 annually on grocery bills.
Premier Wab Kinew emphasized the crucial role nutrition plays in education, stating, “Kids can’t learn on an empty stomach. This program will give children the fuel they need to concentrate, learn, and reach their full potential.”
Building on Existing Government Support
Chrystia Freeland noted that this investment builds on the success of the Canada Child Benefit and other social support programs. By providing school meals, the government aims to reduce the impact of financial barriers, ensuring every child—regardless of their family’s income—has access to essential, healthy food during school hours.
Impact on Local Communities
This program is set to make a broader community impact, particularly in areas with high socioeconomic needs. Manitoba’s focus on sourcing food from local farmers will ensure children receive fresh, nutritious meals while also supporting local agriculture. This initiative will bring peace of mind to many families, knowing that their children are well-nourished and better equipped to succeed in school.
Key Benefits of the Manitoba School Food Program
• $30 million Manitoba investment: Targeting school divisions, schools in need, and community partners.
• $800 in annual savings for families with two children enrolled in the program.
• Focus on local food: Manitoba farmers will supply high-quality ingredients, ensuring meals are both healthy and locally sourced.
This partnership between the Canadian and Manitoba governments is a significant step towards ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has the foundation they need for a successful future.
