Between scrubbing oven vents, emptying junk drawers, and folding that never-ending pile of laundry, a true deep clean can feel like it takes days, or even weeks, for non-professionals. Yet, somehow, experienced cleaning teams can swoop in and transform a home in just a few hours.
So, what’s their secret?

Jackie Henrickson, residential cleaning expert and owner of Merry Maids of Winnipeg and Regina, has been leading her teams since 2010, helping homeowners tackle messes big and small. Over the years, she’s learned the most efficient ways to deep-clean, disinfect, and organize even the trickiest areas of a home. Here, Jackie shares a few of her favourite pro tips that you can try between professional visits.
1. Make Your Jetted Tub Shine — Hands-Free
Love a good soak, but hate scrubbing away stubborn buildup? Skip the elbow grease! Instead of hand-scrubbing, simply fill your jetted tub with hot water, drop in a couple of dishwasher tablets, and run the jets for 15–20 minutes. The circulating solution will break down soap scum and stains (no scrubbing needed). Drain, rinse, and enjoy your sparkling tub.
2. Deep-Clean Your Dishwasher Monthly
Your dishwasher works hard and so, it deserves a little TLC. A monthly deep clean keeps it running efficiently and helps prevent odors:

- Empty the dishwasher completely before you start.
- Clean the filter under hot water to remove trapped food particles.
- Wipe the seals and interior walls with warm water and mild dish soap.
- Place a cup of white vinegar on the top rack and run a hot cycle to cut grease and mineral buildup.
- Sprinkle a cup of baking soda on the bottom and run a short hot cycle to brighten and deodorize.
Pro Tip: Use a dishwasher-safe sanitizer tablet occasionally, especially if you wash cutting boards or baby bottles.
3. Give Your Cutting Boards a “Spa Day”
Cutting boards see a lot of action in the kitchen. Keep them clean and disinfected with this quick routine:
- After each use, wash with hot, soapy water.
- Sanitize by wiping with a solution of one tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water, then rinse and air-dry upright. Never stack damp boards as this traps bacteria.
- For wooden boards, skip the bleach. Instead, scrub with coarse salt and half a lemon to lift stains and odors. Finish by oiling with food-grade mineral oil to prevent drying and cracking.
Why Small Details Matter
Deep cleaning isn’t just about appearances. Regularly tackling overlooked areas like dishwashers, cutting boards, and bathtubs can prevent bacteria buildup, reduce allergens, and keep your home feeling truly fresh.
Cleaning can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. With a few pro techniques, you can save time and see amazing results.

Did You Know?
Professional cleaners often follow a “top-to-bottom” rule—dusting high surfaces like shelves and fans before vacuuming and mopping floors. This ensures dirt doesn’t resettle on freshly cleaned areas. Try it next time you clean for faster results!
